PROFIBUS is an open fieldbus standard that is specified in EN 50170 / IEC 61158. This standard includes the PROFIBUS DP protocol, which is used to connect distributed peripherals. Running a PROFIBUS DP system requires at least one active node (master) that will be responsible for communicating with the system’s various passive nodes (slaves). This master will normally be the system’s PLC. RS-485 is usually used for the physical layer, but using optical fiber cables as a transmission medium is also possible. PROFIBUS is normally set up in linear bus topologies, with all nodes wired in parallel.
